Modding Central

Modding Central, a community made by modders for all to discuss, mod and download mods for multiple games in a safe and secure environment.

This week's update brings you several improvements for modders that we've merged from our community on GitHub, plus more bugfixes. From Tyrsis we have production API changes and terminal changes, so modders can now create their own terminal interfaces such as buttons, sliders, etc. Another addition is Malware's Ship Data update and remote control fixes that makes Coop mode work when a conveyor block (or any block that doesn't have an owner) is between the master and slave assemblers. And last but not least, we have Rexxar's projector ModAPI changes which have added more ModAPI interface to the projection API.
Our GitHub source code has also been updated.
Many thanks to our entire community for helping us develop the game and raise the bar for modding possibilities. We're simply in awe of all the mods and creations you guys publish on the Workshop :)

The upcoming open betas for the new game updates of Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator are coming with a new feature: advanced trailer coupling. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and a video can show even more, so let's take a look at it first:

The new trailer coupling feature is optional - you need to enable it in the game's options to adjust the game's default trailer coupling behavior. Make sure to consider your precise reversing skills before doing so! ;)

The standard trailer coupling allowed for quite some room in the relative positions of the kingpin and the fifth-wheel. You could also "cheat" it by approaching the trailer from an angle. The new trailer coupling option uses full physical collision simulation for the kingpin and fifth-wheel - you will be faced with the same challenge as a real truck driver. Expecting this precision from a newbie player may be too intimidating, so we are keeping the standard simple coupling as a default, but we know that a lot of our experienced truck sim players are asking for more realism, and we hope that you will appreciate that we are improving the game in this regard step by step.

In addition to the kingpin/fifth-wheel simulation, we have also added an additional visual treat to several trailers in the game, with an animation of raising the trailer landing gear.

ARK: Survival Evolved ARK: Survival Evolved - The Center!

The Center, a massive new ARK map which was created by modder Ben Burkart, is the first to be made into an Official Mod, following the announcement of the Official Mods Program.

Venture through The Center’s stunning new biomes and caves so large that they facilitate their own living eco-system.

The massive map doubles the in-game playable geography of the already enormous ARK landscape making it roughly 70 sq. kilometers. The Center is filled with stunning lighting effects, lava rivers, giant picturesque mountains, misty floating islands, ancient underground ruins, enormous ice caves, and of course beyond the breathtaking sights there lay dangerous threats and mysterious secrets to unravel with you and your tribe mates.

The Center is free for all ARK: Survival Evolved players, and for those who have yet to adventure into the mysterious dino-inhabited world, you’re in luck as ARK: Survival Evolved is now on sale for Steam Players for 25% off!

Transcript from the session:

General information:
-Video tutorials and "Modding for dummies" PDF available for free on GDN (GIANTS Developer Network, https://gdn.giants-software.com/ )
-Lots of optimizations has been made when creating the console version
-Traffic vehicles moved from script to engine in FS15, CPU time per frame went down from about 15ms to 0.3ms (factor 50)
-Game development: huge feature list, impossible to implement everything, from feature planning to implementation and game release takes about 3-4 years
-FarmCon in German like a testrun, if it's a success, could be possible to do one in english eventually

Modding General:
-Testing mods in MP should always be done with at least 3 people to make sure sync from client to host and host to clients work as intended
-One should not rely on the mod loading order, there are several ways and hacks to avoid the dependence on the loading order
-Using dynamicallyLoadedParts saves VRAM, editing easier since there's only one instance to edit
-ObjectMask is used to exclude objects from certain render passes, like reflection, can be left on default for most things
-many foliageMultiLayers with few foliageSubLayers vs vice versa: just a different structure, shouldn't affect performance
-Dedicated Server interface uses heuristics to show warnings, shows what could be a problem, not what a problem is, too much vs too little information...
